Summary

Neuroretinitis may be linked to multiple sclerosis (MS). Three MS patients developed neuroretinitis, with some treated with interferon beta, suggesting a potential association requiring further study.

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system.
  • Neuroretinitis, inflammation of the optic nerve and retina, can have various etiologies.
  • The potential association between neuroretinitis and MS requires further investigation.

Observation:

  • This case series reviewed 35 patients diagnosed with neuroretinitis.
  • The medical records were analyzed for concurrent or subsequent diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
  • Three patients (8.6%) with neuroretinitis were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Findings:

  • Neuroretinitis occurred after the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in all three affected patients.
  • Brain biopsy confirmed multiple sclerosis in one patient.
