Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Cardiology
  • Internal Medicine

Background:

  • A 63-year-old male with chronic schizophrenia presented with formal thought disorders, including neologism and paranoid ideation.
  • The patient reported grandiose delusions and a feeling of being influenced by radiation, attributing somatic symptoms to alien influence.

Observation:

  • The patient experienced attacks of weakness and dizziness.
  • A basic physical examination indicated cardiac disease with severe bradycardia.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed symptomatic atrioventricular conduction defects, specifically atrioventricular block III.

Findings:

  • Symptomatic atrioventricular block III was diagnosed.
  • Implantation of a cardiac pacemaker was performed.

Implications:

  • The somatic symptoms completely resolved after pacemaker implantation.
  • The patient achieved full physical recovery, highlighting the link between cardiac function and psychiatric somatic symptoms.
