Summary

Fibromyalgia (FM) and pain sensitivity strongly aggregate in families. Fibromyalgia also coaggregates with major mood disorders, suggesting shared genetic factors may influence both conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology and Psychiatry
  • Genetics and Epidemiology

Background:

  • Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain condition with unclear etiology.
  • Familial aggregation studies are crucial for understanding the genetic and environmental influences on complex diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the familial aggregation of fibromyalgia (FM).
  • To examine the coaggregation of FM with major mood disorders (major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder).
  • To assess familial patterns of pain sensitivity in FM.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited probands with FM and controls with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • Conducted dolorimeter tender point examinations and structured clinical interviews on probands and first-degree relatives.
  • Utilized logistic and linear regression models to analyze aggregation and coaggregation effects within families.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Fibromyalgia showed strong familial aggregation (OR=8.5, P=0.0002).
  • Relatives of FM probands had significantly higher tenderness and lower pain thresholds.
  • FM significantly coaggregated with major mood disorder (OR=1.8, P=0.013).

Conclusions:

  • Fibromyalgia and reduced pressure pain thresholds aggregate in families.
  • Fibromyalgia and major mood disorders share familial aggregation, suggesting common inherited factors.
  • Findings support a potential role for genetic factors in the etiology of FM and pain sensitivity.
