Summary

Recurrent colic in a Thoroughbred mare was linked to cholelithiasis (bile stones) obstructing the bile duct. Definitive diagnosis can be challenging, but this condition should be considered in horses with persistent colic signs.

Background:

Observation:

  • A 13-year-old Thoroughbred mare presented with recurrent colic and icterus.
  • Initial treatments for colic provided temporary relief, but the condition worsened.
  • Clinical signs included fever, icterus, and laboratory findings suggestive of obstructive biliary disease.

Findings:

  • Necropsy revealed multiple large, dark brown choleliths obstructing the hepatopancreatic ampulla.
  • Histopathology confirmed biliary fibrosis, cholangiohepatitis, and bile pigment accumulation.
