Background:

  • Voice prostheses, such as Provox and Blom-Singer, are crucial for alaryngeal speech rehabilitation after laryngectomy.
  • These devices are implanted in a tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) to restore voice production.
  • Long-term device integrity and function are essential for patient quality of life.

Observation:

  • A study examined 27 patients using voice prostheses for 6 months to 2 years.
  • Contamination of the esophageal flange and protective valve with fungi and pathogenic bacteria was observed upon removal.
  • Deformation and reduced motility of the valve led to leakage into the airways.

Findings:

  • Bacteriological analysis identified Candida albicans, Candida krusei, and Candida glabralis in 11 patients.
  • Fungal contamination compromised the prosthesis's watertight seal and motility.
