Summary

Autoscopy, a rare seizure symptom, is linked to the right parietal lobe in epilepsy patients. This finding suggests disruptions in body representation during seizures may cause these unusual perceptions.

Background:

  • Autoscopy, a perception of one's own body or face, can be experienced internally or externally.
  • Partial epilepsy is a primary cause of autoscopy, but its significance as a seizure symptom is debated.

Observation:

  • Three epilepsy patients presented with autoscopy.
  • All patients had lesions in the right parietal region, confirmed by MRI.
  • Autoscopy occurred alongside other seizure signs indicating a right parietal origin.

Findings:

  • Autoscopy was demonstrated to have an ictal (seizure-related) mechanism.
  • Seizures originated from the nondominant (right) parietal lobe in all cases.
  • One patient's seizure origin was confirmed via EEG monitoring.
