Summary

Antibodies to SARS-related coronaviruses were found in 1.8% of Hong Kong adults in 2001. This indicates prior exposure to severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) or similar viruses before the 2003 outbreak.

Area of Science:

  • Virology
  • Epidemiology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • The severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) emerged in 2002-2003, causing a global health crisis.
  • Understanding the origins and prior circulation of SARS-CoV is crucial for pandemic preparedness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the seroprevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV and related animal coronaviruses in a healthy adult population in Hong Kong prior to the 2003 outbreak.
  • To assess the extent of prior exposure to SARS-related viruses.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized immunofluorescence and neutralization assays to detect antibodies.
  • Recruited 938 healthy adults in Hong Kong in 2001 for serological testing.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Detected antibodies to SARS-CoV and/or animal SARS-CoV-like viruses in 17 individuals (1.8% of the cohort).
  • The presence of antibodies suggests exposure to SARS-related coronaviruses at least two years before the recognized SARS outbreak.

Conclusions:

  • A small proportion of the Hong Kong population had serological evidence of exposure to SARS-related coronaviruses before 2003.
  • These findings highlight the potential for pre-outbreak circulation of SARS-CoV or related viruses in humans or animals.
