Summary

This study reports the first intracavernous granular cell tumor originating from the oculomotor nerve. Surgical removal of this rare cranial nerve tumor proved curative, highlighting its importance in differential diagnoses.

Background:

  • Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are rare in the central nervous system.
  • Only six GCTs arising from cranial nerves have been documented previously.

Observation:

  • A 42-year-old male presented with left-sided third-nerve paresis and reduced visual acuity.
  • MRI revealed an intracavernous mass extending into the superior orbital fissure and optic canal.
  • The tumor was surgically resected via pterional craniotomy with optic nerve decompression.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a granular cell tumor.
  • This represents the first reported case of a predominantly intracavernous GCT arising from the oculomotor nerve.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • GCTs should be considered in the differential diagnosis of intracavernous masses.
  • Surgical intervention for these rare tumors can be curative.
