[Design and implementation of an integrated HIS-RIS-PACS system: our experience]

Purpose of the Study:

• To develop an integrated information system supporting administrative and healthcare processes in a specialized research institution.
• To implement a Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for managing clinical data and radiological reports/images.
• To enhance the efficacy and efficiency of services provided through technological innovation.

Main Methods:

• Implemented a RIS-PACS system in four phases tailored to the needs of the Diagnostic Imaging Department.
• Designed the system considering workflows between hospital wards, outpatient centers, and the imaging department.
• Developed protocols to integrate HIS, RIS, PACS, and imaging modalities for seamless workflow management, aiming for a filmless and paperless environment.

Main Results:

• Completed Phases I and II, establishing efficient, safe, and complete interaction between hospital wards, outpatient centers, and Radiology Units.
• Achieved improved overall hospital performance with the outpatient center now fully managed digitally.
• Phases III and IV will enable routine distribution of radiological reports and images, reducing film and material usage.

Conclusions:

• The project represents a pioneering implementation of a virtual radiology department across physically separate locations in Italy.
• Successful project completion was attributed to meticulous planning, definition of clinical/functional specifications, and phased implementation.
• Establishing an effective information system for Diagnostic Imaging requires detailed operational planning and careful execution of each implementation phase.
