Area of Science:

  • Statistics
  • Survival Analysis
  • Biostatistics

Background:

  • The Cox proportional hazards model is widely used in survival analysis.
  • Assessing the overall fit and correct functional form of covariates in this model remains a challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a new type of residual and a functional form test for the Cox proportional hazards model.
  • To develop residual plots for identifying covariate functional forms.
  • To compare the proposed test with existing methods.

Main Methods:

  • Development of censoring consistent residuals.
  • Modification of the Stute, González Manteiga, and Presedo Quindimil omnibus test.
  • Creation of residual plots for functional form assessment.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Simulation study comparing the new test with the Lin, Wei, and Ying functional form test.
  • Main Results:

    • The proposed censoring consistent residuals and functional form test provide a reliable method for assessing Cox model fit.
    • Residual plots effectively aid in identifying correct covariate functional forms.
    • Simulation results demonstrate the utility and performance of the new approach.

    Conclusions:

    • The new residuals and functional form test offer valuable tools for improving the application and interpretation of Cox proportional hazards models.
    • The method is applicable to both simulated and real-world survival data.
