Summary

Adding walnuts to a Mediterranean diet improves blood vessel function and lowers cholesterol in hypercholesterolemic individuals. This dietary change may offer heart protection beyond simply reducing cholesterol levels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if walnut consumption can reverse endothelial dysfunction in hypercholesterolemic individuals.
  • To assess the impact of replacing monounsaturated fats with walnuts on vascular function and biomarkers.

Main Methods:

  • A crossover study design randomized 21 hypercholesterolemic participants to two diets for 4 weeks each: a Mediterranean diet and a walnut-enriched diet.
  • The walnut diet replaced approximately 32% of monounsaturated fat energy with walnuts.
  • Brachial artery vasomotor function was assessed via ultrasound, alongside fasting blood sample analysis.
