Summary

The age of custom base composite materials does not impact bond strength in indirect bonding up to 30 days. However, aging custom base composites for 100 days significantly reduces bond strength, affecting orthodontic bracket adhesion.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Orthodontic Technology
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • Indirect bonding is a common orthodontic technique.
  • The aging of custom base composite materials may influence bond strength.
  • Understanding material aging is crucial for predictable clinical outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of custom base composite age on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets.
  • To determine the maximum safe aging period for custom base composites in indirect bonding.
  • To compare two different composite-sealant systems regarding bond strength and aging effects.

Main Methods:

  • In vitro evaluation of 150 bovine mandibular incisors.
  • Application of the Thomas indirect bonding technique with two composite-sealant combinations.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Preaging of custom base composites for 24 hours, 7, 15, 30, and 100 days.
  • Shear bond strength testing to measure bracket adhesion.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant difference in shear bond strength between the two composite-sealant combinations.
    • Custom base composite aging up to 30 days did not negatively affect bond strength (mean > 15 MPa).
    • A significant reduction in bond strength was observed for composites aged 100 days prior to sealant polymerization.

    Conclusions:

    • Clinicians can safely utilize custom base composites aged up to 30 days with the Thomas indirect bonding technique.
    • Extended aging (100 days) of custom base composites compromises bond strength, potentially impacting orthodontic treatment.
    • Material aging is a critical factor to consider for optimal indirect bonding procedures.
