Solid cell nests in the thyroid may act as stem cells. Their main cells show self-renewal and differentiation markers, suggesting a role in adult thyroid stem cell populations.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Cell Biology
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • Solid cell nests (SCNs) are components of the human thyroid gland, comprising main cells and C cells.
  • The potential stem cell nature of SCNs has not been fully elucidated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the stem cell characteristics of SCNs in the adult human thyroid.
  • To evaluate histological features and immunohistochemical markers of proliferation and differentiation in SCNs.

Main Methods:

  • Examined 24 cases of SCNs for histological features.
  • Assessed immunohistochemical expression of p63, bcl-2, telomerase, Ki-67, and minichromosome maintenance protein 2.
  • Compared proliferative indices of SCNs with adjacent and distant thyroid follicular cells.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • SCNs exhibited diverse histological features, including mixed follicles and papillary formations.
  • Main cells of SCNs consistently expressed telomerase and showed strong bcl-2 immunoreactivity.
  • SCNs displayed a higher proliferation index than surrounding thyroid follicular cells.

Conclusions:

  • Main cells of SCNs possess stem cell properties, including self-renewal (telomerase activity) and differentiation potential (p63 and bcl-2 expression).
  • SCNs may represent a significant pool of stem cells within the adult thyroid gland.
