Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Prosthodontics
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Removable partial dentures (RPDs) can introduce occlusal interferences.
  • These interferences may negatively impact masticatory function and the stomatognathic system.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of RPD-generated occlusal interference on masticatory efficiency.
  • To determine the effectiveness of occlusal adjustment in improving chewing function.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-six patients with RPDs participated in the study.
  • Masticatory performance was assessed using the peanut-light absorption test.
  • Assessments were conducted before and after occlusal adjustment of the RPDs.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Occlusal adjustment led to a statistically significant improvement in masticatory efficiency (P<0.01).
  • The presence or elimination of occlusal interferences directly influenced chewing ability.

Conclusions:

  • Occlusal factors are critical determinants of RPD quality and stomatognathic system health.
  • Occlusal adjustment is an essential procedure in the fabrication and maintenance of dental prostheses.
