Context:

A case-control study was conducted in Wuhan City in 1988 to investigate preterm delivery.
The study included 130 singleton preterm infants and 260 term infants as controls.

Purpose:

To identify significant risk factors associated with preterm delivery.
To provide evidence for interventions aimed at reducing the incidence of premature births.

Summary:

Key risk factors identified include edema-proteinuria-hypertension syndrome, maternal diseases during pregnancy, hyperemesis gravidarum, vaginal bleeding, premature rupture of membranes, inadequate weight gain, psychosocial stress, insufficient prenatal care, short maternal stature, early menarche, multigravida status, prior induced abortions, and passive smoking.
Odds ratios (OR) ranged from 1.6 to 5.1 for various risk factors.

Impact:

The findings underscore the importance of early management of pregnancy complications and robust prenatal care to mitigate preterm birth rates.
This research contributes to understanding the multifactorial etiology of preterm delivery and informs public health strategies.
