Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Surgical Procedures
  • Medical Treatments

Background:

  • Lip leucoderma (LL) is a prevalent condition causing significant psychological distress.
  • Medical management of LL is often challenging due to the lack of hair follicles, hindering natural repigmentation.
  • Surgical melanocyte transfer offers a potential solution for repigmenting LL.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of punch grafting (PG) for repigmenting lip leucoderma (LL).
  • To assess the degree of repigmentation and identify potential complications associated with PG in LL treatment.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 108 cases of stable and resistant LL of diverse etiologies.
  • Patients were monitored for up to 5 years post-procedure.
  • Punch grafting (PG) was utilized as the primary surgical intervention.

Main Results:

  • Successful graft take was observed in 91% of cases (98 out of 108).
  • Complete repigmentation was achieved in 72% of patients (78 cases).
  • Cobblestoning was the most frequent complication, affecting 30% of patients (32 cases).

Conclusions:

  • Punch grafting (PG) is a straightforward, in-office procedure suitable for treating lip leucoderma (LL).
  • Herpes-labialis-induced LL (HlLL) should be excluded from this treatment due to graft rejection observed in these cases.
