Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Allergy and Clinical Immunology

Background:

  • Latex products, including surgical gloves and condoms, are widely used in healthcare and personal life.
  • Immediate hypersensitivity reactions to latex are a growing concern.

Observation:

  • Two patients experienced anaphylactic reactions attributed to latex exposure.
  • One reaction occurred intraoperatively due to surgeon's latex gloves.
  • The other reaction was linked to vaginal contact with a latex condom.

Findings:

  • Radioallergosorbent test (RAST) and scratch tests confirmed latex as the allergen in both cases.
  • These findings highlight latex as a significant allergen causing severe reactions.

Implications:

  • Healthcare professionals should be aware of the potential for severe hypersensitivity to latex products.
  • Latex allergy must be considered in the differential diagnosis of intraoperative and idiopathic anaphylaxis.
  • Increased vigilance regarding latex exposure is recommended given its prevalence.
