Background:

  • Nanophthalmos is a rare condition characterized by a small, hyperopic eye.
  • Scleral thickening is a key feature, but its underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms remain unclear.

Observation:

  • Morphological examination of scleral tissue from a nanophthalmic patient revealed unusually thickened tissue.
  • Collagen bundles within the thickened sclera were arranged in an irregular, interlacing pattern.

Findings:

  • Tissue culture of nanophthalmic sclerocytes showed secretion of granules positive for Alcian blue and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining.
  • Sclerocytes from control eyes did not exhibit this granular secretion.

Implications:

  • These findings suggest a modified glycosaminoglycan metabolism in nanophthalmic sclerocytes.
