Summary

Exercise significantly boosts growth hormone (GH) secretion, but this study found that the stomach hormone ghrelin does not play a role in this exercise-induced GH response in healthy males.

Background:

  • Exercise is a known stimulus for growth hormone (GH) secretion.
  • Hypothalamic peptides like GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin are key regulators of exercise-induced GH release.
  • The role of ghrelin, a stomach-derived peptide with GH-releasing properties, in this context is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between exercise intensity and GH and ghrelin plasma concentrations.
  • To determine if ghrelin participates in regulating the GH response to varying exercise workloads in healthy young men.

Main Methods:

  • Eight healthy young male volunteers performed treadmill exercise at 50%, 70%, and 90% of their maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) on separate occasions.
