Summary

This pilot study investigated secretin for schizophrenia, finding no significant symptom improvement. However, some patients showed transient benefits, suggesting further research into related brain systems for schizophrenia treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Preliminary studies suggested secretin (a gastrointestinal peptide) may improve autism symptoms.
  • Autism and schizophrenia share phenotypic overlaps, prompting investigation into secretin for schizophrenia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a pilot study evaluating secretin's efficacy in treatment-refractory schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-two patients with schizophrenia were randomized to receive a single intravenous dose of porcine secretin or placebo.
  • Symptom severity was assessed using the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale for Schizophrenia (PANSS) and Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI).
  • Evaluations occurred at baseline, 2 days post-infusion, and weekly for 4 weeks.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences in PANSS or CGI scores were observed between the secretin and placebo groups via repeated measures ANOVA.
  • Several patients receiving secretin experienced clinically meaningful, though transient, symptom reductions.
  • A higher percentage of patients treated with secretin were rated as improved on the CGI.

Conclusions:

  • While secretin did not demonstrate statistically significant efficacy in this pilot study, observed transient improvements warrant further investigation.
  • Future research should explore brain hypocretins and related molecular systems in schizophrenia treatment.
