Gated blood-pool single photon emission computed tomographic (GBPS) left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) calculations showed good correlation with planar gated blood-pool imaging (GBPI). However, GBPS values differed significantly from GBPI, indicating they are not equivalent.

Area of Science:

  • Nuclear Cardiology
  • Cardiovascular Imaging
  • Medical Physics

Background:

  • Planar gated blood-pool imaging (GBPI) is a standard for assessing left ventricular (LV) function non-invasively.
  • Gated blood-pool single photon emission computed tomographic (GBPS) offers simultaneous visualization of all cardiac chambers.
  • Evaluating the agreement between automated/manual GBPS and conventional GBPI left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the agreement between automated and manual LVEF calculations derived from GBPS.
  • To compare these GBPS-derived LVEF values with conventional GBPI LVEF measurements.

Main Methods:

  • Performed GBPI in 22 patients, followed by GBPS data acquisition.
  • Calculated LVEF using NuSMUGA software (automated and manual methods) from GBPS data.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Correlated automated and manual GBPS LVEF with conventional GBPI LVEF.
  • Main Results:

    • Automated GBPS LVEF correlated well with GBPI LVEF (r = 0.88).
    • Manual GBPS LVEF also correlated well with GBPI LVEF (r = 0.90).
    • Both automated and manual GBPS LVEF values showed significant differences compared to GBPI LVEF, and manual GBPS LVEF was significantly higher than automated GBPS LVEF.

    Conclusions:

    • NuSMUGA GBPS software provides reproducible LVEF values.
    • Automated and manual GBPS LVEF correlate well with conventional GBPI.
    • GBPS LVEF calculations (both automated and manual) are not equivalent to GBPI LVEF measurements.
