A novel anatomical feature in the knee

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Human Anatomy

Background:

  • The patellofemoral articulation is crucial for knee function.
  • Anterior knee pain syndrome (AKPS) is common but poorly understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a previously undocumented anatomical feature on the suprapatellar pouch floor.
  • To investigate the prevalence and potential significance of this feature.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective analysis of 457 consecutive knee arthroscopies.
  • Systematic recording of the presence or absence of the 'patellar entry feature'.
  • Data collected by a single senior surgeon.

Main Results:

  • The patellar entry feature was observed in 294 out of 457 arthroscopies (64.3%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • The feature was more prevalent in females (40%) compared to cases where it was absent (27%).
  • Patient age ranged from 8 to 96 years (mean 39.4).
  • Conclusions:

    • A distinct 'patellar entry feature' is frequently present in the suprapatellar pouch.
    • This anatomical finding may be associated with the patellofemoral joint and anterior knee pain.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate its role in knee biomechanics.
