The femur is the body's longest and strongest bone spanning the thigh region. Its head articulates with the acetabulum of the hip bone to form the hip joint. An unusual double patella: a case report.

Summary

A rare case of double patella after a sleeve fracture in a 10-year-old boy was successfully treated with surgical excision of the accessory patella. This surgical approach addressed persistent weakness and effusion, marking a unique outcome post-primary fracture treatment.

Background:

Sleeve fractures of the patella are uncommon pediatric injuries.
Double patella (bipartite patella) is a rare anomaly, often asymptomatic.
Concurrent occurrence after surgical intervention for sleeve fracture is exceptionally rare.

Observation:

A 10-year-old boy sustained a sleeve fracture of the patella.
He presented 3 years post-surgery with persistent knee weakness and effusion.
Radiographic evaluation revealed a double patella (accessory ossification center).

Findings:

Surgical management included excision of the accessory patella and lowering of the main patella.
The patient experienced resolution of symptoms following the corrective surgery.
