[A case of mediastinal liposarcoma].

Background:

Primary liposarcomas of the mediastinum are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all mediastinal tumors.
These neoplasms often present incidentally on routine imaging.
Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for patient management.

Observation:

A 74-year-old asymptomatic male presented with an abnormal shadow on chest roentgenogram.
Computed tomogram (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging identified a mediastinal tumor.
The tumor was located in the right posterior mediastinum.

Findings:

Surgical resection confirmed a well-differentiated liposarcoma.
MR imaging demonstrated superior delineation of tumor extent compared to CT.
Neither CT nor MR imaging definitively differentiated liposarcoma from lipoma.

Implications:

This case underscores the importance of considering rare neoplasms in the differential diagnosis of mediastinal masses.
Advanced imaging techniques like MR provide valuable information on tumor characteristics.
Further research may improve the diagnostic accuracy of imaging modalities for distinguishing liposarcomas from benign lipomas.
