Background:

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) is an otologic emergency.
While common in adults, SSHL in children is less understood.
Identifying causes and prognosis in pediatric SSHL is crucial for timely intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the clinical characteristics of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) in pediatric patients.
To compare the features and outcomes of SSHL in children versus adults.

Main Methods:

A comparative study involving 21 children with SSHL and 67 adult controls with SSHL.
Clinical data collection and analysis of potential causative factors and hearing outcomes.

Main Results:

Identified causes in 52.4% of pediatric cases, including mumps, URTI, ototoxicity, noise exposure, and genetic disorders.
Children with SSHL exhibited more profound hearing impairment.
Prognosis for hearing recovery was less favorable in the pediatric group.

Conclusions:

Pediatric SSHL has distinct etiological profiles and poorer prognoses compared to adult SSHL.
Early diagnosis and targeted treatment are essential for improving outcomes in children with SSHL.
