Summary

Elevated thrombospondin (TSP) blood levels are common in patients with gastrointestinal, breast, and lung cancers. This suggests TSP may play a role in cancer metastasis and could be a potential blood marker for detecting metastasis.

Background:

  • Thrombospondin (TSP) is a glycoprotein found in platelets and tissues.
  • TSP promotes cell adhesion, platelet aggregation, and has been linked to tumor metastasis in murine models.
  • Thromboembolic events are frequent in patients with metastatic cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of TSP in human cancer by measuring TSP blood levels in patients with various malignancies.
  • To determine if TSP blood levels can serve as a marker for cancer metastasis.

Main Methods:

  • Blood TSP levels were measured using indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
  • TSP levels were compared between 20 control subjects (healthy and acutely ill) and patients with gastrointestinal, breast, and lung cancer.
