Iodinated oral contrast significantly improves myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) by reducing scatter from the bowel. This enhances cardiac SPECT image quality more than water alone.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if iodinated oral contrast (IOC) reduces scatter and improves cardiac SPECT images during MPI.
  • To test the hypothesis that IOC absorbs gamma rays from 99mTc sestamibi in the bowel.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty subjects undergoing adenosine stress 99mTc sestamibi cardiac SPECT were randomized.
  • Groups received either IOC, water, or no intervention (controls).
  • Images were analyzed for infra-cardiac counts, image variability, and contrast.
