Summary

Phonological speech errors are better explained by features and prosodic constituents, not segments. This study argues against the need for a segmental level of analysis in phonology.

Area of Science:

  • Phonology
  • Linguistics
  • Speech Science

Background:

  • The prevailing theory attributes phonologically driven speech errors to segments.
  • Alternative explanations have been overlooked.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To challenge the segment-based view of speech errors.
  • To propose features and prosodic constituents as superior explanatory units.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of unambiguous cases of speech errors.
  • Examination of markedness patterns.

Main Results:

  • Evidence supports the role of features in speech errors.
  • Evidence supports the role of prosodic constituents in speech errors.
  • No positive evidence found for segments causing speech errors.

Conclusions:

  • Features and prosodic constituents offer a more robust framework for understanding speech errors.
  • A segmental level of analysis is unnecessary in phonology.
