Area of Science:

  • Traumatology
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • All-terrain vehicle (ATV) trauma causes over 300 deaths annually.
  • Existing research primarily addresses pediatric ATV trauma.
  • Senior citizens represent an increasing demographic of ATV users.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare presentation and outcome data between geriatric and nongeriatric all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riders.
  • To analyze trends in geriatric ATV-related trauma.

Main Methods:

  • A trauma registry was queried for all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accidents between January 1988 and December 2002.
  • Data from 200 total ATV accidents were analyzed, focusing on 8 patients over age 60.
  • Geriatric and nongeriatric riders were compared for injury patterns, physiological scores, and clinical outcomes.

Main Results:

  • The anatomic distribution of injuries was similar between geriatric and nongeriatric riders.
  • Younger patients were more likely to have used ethanol or drugs.
  • Geriatric patients presented with worse physiological scores and trended toward longer hospital stays and poorer functional outcomes.
  • Mortality was nonsignificantly higher in the geriatric group (12.5% vs. 3.45%).

Conclusions:

  • Geriatric all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riders experience worse outcomes compared to younger riders.
  • There is a notable rise in geriatric ATV-related trauma, mirroring national trends.
  • The institution of geriatric-specific ATV safety programs is recommended.
