Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Perinatal Epidemiology
  • Maternal Health Trends

Background:

  • Rising maternal age is a global trend impacting obstetric outcomes.
  • Understanding regional variations in maternal age is crucial for public health.
  • Previous studies highlight increased risks associated with advanced maternal age.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze trends in maternal age among pregnant women in Flanders, Belgium.
  • To investigate the relationship between maternal age and maternal mortality.
  • To identify specific age groups at higher risk.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of a population-based regional perinatal database.
  • Data collected over a ten-year period (1991-2000).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Statistical examination of maternal age trends and mortality ratios.
  • Main Results:

    • A significant increase in maternal age was observed for both primiparous and multiparous women between 1991 and 2000.
    • The overall maternal mortality ratio was 5.8.
    • Advanced maternal age significantly elevated mortality risk: RR 7.0 from age 35, and RR 30.0 from age 40.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions and support for older pregnant women.
    • Further research is recommended to explore factors facilitating career and reproduction for women.
    • Specialized care strategies for pregnant women of advanced maternal age are warranted.
