Context:

The Symptom-Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) has limitations in psychometric properties.
Patients presenting with somatic complaints often require screening for underlying psychiatric symptoms.

Purpose:

To introduce and validate the Symptom-Checklist-27 (SCL-27) as a modified screening tool.
To assess the psychometric properties and establish reference values for the SCL-27 in a large German sample.

Summary:

The SCL-27 is a brief screening instrument with six subscales: depressive, dysthymic, vegetative, agoraphobic, sociophobic symptoms, and symptoms of mistrust.
It includes a Global Severity Index (GSI-27) and features short scales with 4-6 items.
Psychometric evaluation in over 2000 subjects demonstrated sufficient internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha >= 0.70) and high correlation with SCL-90-R GSI (r=0.93).
