Summary

This study investigated auditory perception, finding that interaural level-difference (ILD) thresholds were higher in lag-click conditions than single-click conditions. Intensity did not affect ILD thresholds, unlike previous interaural time-difference (ITD) findings.

Background:

  • The precedence effect in auditory perception describes how listeners perceive the location of a sound based on the first arriving signal, even with later, spatially distinct echoes.
  • Previous research has explored the influence of stimulus intensity on auditory localization cues like interaural time differences (ITDs) and interaural level differences (ILDs) under various listening conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the effect of stimulus intensity on interaural level-difference (ILD) discrimination thresholds in untrained individuals under lag-click and single-click conditions.
  • To compare ILD discrimination performance with previously reported findings for interaural time-difference (ITD) discrimination under similar auditory precedence paradigms.

    • A proposed model suggests that the decay of sensory memory and intensity-dependent changes in auditory filter bandwidths may explain the differing effects of intensity on ILD and ITD thresholds.
