Area of Science:

  • Optics and Photonics
  • Beam Propagation Physics

Background:

  • Gaussian Schell model (GSM) beams are widely used in optical systems.
  • Understanding the nonparaxial propagation of these beams is essential for advanced applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose and define the concept of a partially coherent nonparaxial beam.
  • To derive a closed-form expression for the propagation of nonparaxial GSM beams in free space.
  • To investigate the propagation characteristics of these beams.

Main Methods:

  • Derivation of a closed-form mathematical expression for beam propagation.
  • Application of the derived expression to analyze nonparaxial GSM beam behavior.
  • Introduction and analysis of a new parameter, f(sigma).

Main Results:

  • A closed-form expression for the propagation of nonparaxial GSM beams in free space is successfully derived.
  • The study demonstrates the necessity of a new parameter, f(sigma), for describing partially coherent nonparaxial beams.
  • The interplay between parameters f and f(sigma) is shown to govern beam nonparaxiality.

Conclusions:

  • The concept of partially coherent nonparaxial beams is established.
  • The derived propagation formula provides a valuable tool for analyzing these beams.
  • The new parameter f(sigma) offers deeper insight into the nonparaxial behavior of partially coherent beams.
