Summary

Allergic contact dermatitis can worsen external ear canal inflammation. Four of nine patients showed allergies to corticosteroids or antibiotics, suggesting these as potential causes for treatment-resistant otitis externa.

Background:

  • Inflammatory dermatosis of the external auditory canal (EAC) is a common clinical presentation.
  • Otitis externa, or inflammation of the EAC, can be challenging to treat and may have various underlying causes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential role of allergic contact dermatitis in patients presenting with inflammatory dermatosis of the EAC.
  • To identify specific allergens contributing to treatment-resistant otitis externa.

Main Methods:

  • A 12-month observational study was conducted.
  • Nine patients with inflammatory dermatosis predominantly affecting the EAC were evaluated in a contact dermatitis clinic.
  • Allergens, including topical corticosteroids and antibiotics, were assessed in patients with persistent symptoms.
