Summary

Extrapulmonary hydatid cysts in the thorax are rare but treatable with surgery. Prompt surgical excision is crucial for effective treatment and preventing complications from these intrathoracic cysts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report surgical experience with intrathoracic but extrapulmonary hydatid cysts.
  • To discuss treatment concepts for these rare cystic formations.

  • A retrospective review of 133 patients with thoracic hydatid cysts treated surgically between 1990 and 2002.
  • Detailed analysis of 14 patients with extrapulmonary thoracic hydatid cysts located in the pleura, mediastinum, pericardium, or diaphragm.
