Summary

Retinal detachment is a newly identified complication of focal dermal hypoplasia, a rare genetic disorder. This case report highlights the importance of recognizing this association for timely diagnosis and management of ocular abnormalities.

Background:

  • Focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by developmental anomalies affecting the skin, limbs, and other organs.
  • Ocular abnormalities are common in FDH, but retinal detachment has not been previously documented.

Observation:

  • This report details a case of a child diagnosed with FDH.
  • The child presented with a colobomatous retinal detachment, a previously unreported finding in FDH.

Findings:

  • The case demonstrates a clear association between focal dermal hypoplasia and retinal detachment.
  • This finding expands the spectrum of known ocular manifestations in FDH.

Implications:

  • Ophthalmologists should consider retinal detachment in the differential diagnosis of ocular issues in patients with FDH.
