Summary

Body image perception after laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) and open donor nephrectomy (ODN) is similar for living kidney donors. This study found no significant differences in body image or cosmetic outcomes between the two surgical approaches.

Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Transplant Surgery
  • Body Image Research

Background:

  • Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) is presumed to offer better cosmetic results than open donor nephrectomy (ODN).
  • Donor perspectives on body image after nephrectomy have not been previously studied.
  • This research examines donor body image following both LDN and ODN.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the body image and cosmetic outcomes of living kidney donors who underwent either LDN or ODN.
  • To assess donor satisfaction with their physical appearance after different nephrectomy techniques.

Main Methods:

  • A body image questionnaire, including the Body Image Scale (BIS) and Cosmetic Scale (CS), was administered to donors.
  • 56 LDN and 69 ODN subjects who had surgery between 1994 and 2001 participated.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Response rate was 72% of 174 invited donors.
  • Main Results:

    • Demographics (gender, age, BMI) and follow-up duration were comparable between groups, though ODN follow-up was longer.
    • No significant differences were observed in BIS or CS scores between LDN and ODN groups.
    • Body image and cosmetic scores showed no association with follow-up duration, gender, age, or BMI.

    Conclusions:

    • Living kidney donors report similar body image and cosmetic satisfaction regardless of whether they undergo laparoscopic or open donor nephrectomy.
    • Surgical approach (LDN vs. ODN) does not appear to impact donor's perception of their bodily appearance post-donation.
