Summary

Consciousness is not required for the autonomous nervous system (ANS) to acquire conditioned responses (CR) in Pavlovian conditioning. Even when stimuli are not consciously perceived, the ANS can still learn stimulus-shock contingencies.

    • These findings challenge traditional views on the role of consciousness in associative learning.
