Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Radiation Oncology

Background:

  • Stomal recurrence after total laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer is a significant clinical challenge, often associated with poor prognosis.
  • Understanding risk factors is crucial for improving patient outcomes and developing targeted treatment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze risk factors associated with stomal recurrence after total laryngectomy for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
  • To evaluate the impact of postoperative radiotherapy on the incidence of stomal recurrence.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 402 patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma treated with total laryngectomy between 1982 and 1996.
  • Identification of significant risk factors for stomal recurrence through statistical analysis.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Glottic-subglottic tumor localization and regional tumor spread were identified as significant risk factors for stomal recurrence.
  • Postoperative radiotherapy demonstrated a significant reduction in the risk of stomal recurrence.

Conclusions:

  • Stomal recurrence following total laryngectomy is not always incurable, with specific risk factors identified.
  • Adjuvant postoperative radiotherapy is a critical intervention for reducing stomal recurrence rates in this patient population.
