Summary

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) does not increase circulating free nitrotyrosine, a marker of oxidative stress. This study suggests repetitive hypoxemia in OSA patients does not elevate nitric oxide-mediated oxidative stress.

Background:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to cardiovascular disease, endothelial dysfunction, and oxidative stress due to nocturnal hypoxemia.
  • Circulating free nitrotyrosine is a biomarker for nitric oxide (NO)-induced oxidative/nitrosative stress.
  • Nitrosative stress is implicated in cardiovascular disease development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test if severe hypoxemia from OSA increases NO-mediated oxidative stress.
  • To investigate the relationship between OSA, hypoxemia, and circulating free nitrotyrosine levels.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 10 men with newly diagnosed moderate to severe OSA and 10 healthy male controls.
  • Measured free nitrotyrosine using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry before and after untreated apneic sleep.
