Summary

Cervical ectopy is linked to a higher prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, particularly HPV type 16. Patients with cervical ectopy also show increased anti-HPV16 secretory IgA (sIgA) antibodies.

Background:

  • Cervical ectopy is a common condition where the glandular cells of the cervix are present on the outer cervical surface.
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major cause of cervical cancer.
  • The role of cervical ectopy in HPV infection and the associated immune response requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of HPV and HPV type 16 (HPV16) in women with cervical ectopy.
  • To assess the presence of anti-HPV16 secretory IgA (sIgA) antibodies in cervical mucus of these patients.

Main Methods:

  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect HPV and HPV16 DNA in cervical samples.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was employed to measure anti-HPV16 sIgA antibodies in cervical mucus.
  • Study included patients with cervical ectopy, HPV-associated lesions, and healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • HPV DNA prevalence was significantly higher in women with cervical ectopy compared to controls (P=0.04).
  • HPV16 was found to be 6.3 times more prevalent in cervical ectopy.
  • Anti-HPV16 sIgA antibodies were detected more frequently in cervical ectopy patients (P=0.0004).

Conclusions:

  • Cervical ectopy is associated with an increased risk of HPV infection.
  • HPV type 16 shows a high prevalence in cervical ectopy.
  • The presence of anti-HPV16 sIgA antibodies indicates an immune response in patients with cervical ectopy.
