Summary

Kidney cysts, even single ones, can indicate reduced kidney function in patients under 60. This suggests acquired cystic kidney disease may start early, warranting consideration of underlying renal issues.

Background:

  • Sporadic renal cysts are common and usually considered clinically insignificant.
  • However, multiple cysts are frequent in end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
  • This study investigated if solitary or few cysts signal early reduced kidney function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the hypothesis that solitary or few renal cysts are an early sign of diminished renal function.
  • To explore the relationship between renal cyst presence and kidney function parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated 561 hospitalized patients undergoing contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT).
  • Correlated clinical characteristics and renal function parameters with the presence or absence of renal cysts.
