Area of Science:

  • Nursing Research
  • Biostatistics
  • Health Sciences

Background:

  • Convenience samples are frequently employed in nursing research.
  • The representativeness of convenience samples is often not rigorously determined.
  • Potential bias in convenience samples can impact study generalizability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe methods for assessing potential bias in convenience samples.
  • To evaluate the representativeness of a specific convenience sample in a nursing context.
  • To advocate for more frequent reporting of sample representativeness in nursing studies.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a cross-sectional study design.
  • Employed a convenience sample of 141 subjects.
  • Applied statistical analyses, including percentage and average variability (variance of the mean), to assess sample bias.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The analysis indicated that the study's convenience sample was representative of the broader research setting population.
  • Statistical measures of variability supported the sample's generalizability to the population.

Conclusions:

  • The methods used provide a framework for assessing convenience sample bias in nursing research.
  • Findings suggest that with appropriate statistical analysis, convenience samples can be deemed representative.
  • Further research reporting on sample representativeness is crucial for enhancing the credibility of studies using convenience samples.
