Summary

Two polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods, PCR-SSCP and PCR-RFLP, effectively genotype herpes simplex virus (HSV) types I and II. These techniques are reliable for clinical labs and identified HSV-2 as the predominant type in cervical samples.
