Summary

A majority of US adults have poor diet quality, indicated by a low Healthy Eating Index (HEI) score. Lower diet quality is significantly associated with increased odds of obesity.

Area of Science:

  • Nutrition Science
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Assessing population diet quality is crucial for public health.
  • The US Department of Agriculture developed the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) to measure diet quality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diet quality of a representative US population sample using the HEI.
  • To investigate the association between HEI scores and obesity prevalence.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional analysis of 10,930 adults from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
  • Diet quality assessed using the HEI (0-100 scale), with lower scores indicating poorer diets.
  • Analysis included sociodemographic, physical activity, dietary, and health data.

Main Results:

  • Most participants exhibited low HEI scores, signifying poor diet quality.
  • Diet quality varied across demographic groups (age, gender, race/ethnicity, income, education).
  • A significant association was found between low HEI scores and increased odds of overweight and obesity.

Conclusions:

  • The HEI offers a comprehensive method for assessing population diet quality.
  • Emphasizing US Dietary Guidelines is recommended to improve public health.
  • Further research is needed to determine the effectiveness of these guidelines in disease prevention.
