Summary

Intraoperative trunk scieroobliteration of the great saphenous vein (GSV) offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional GSV stripping for lower limb varices. This new method reduces complications and speeds recovery, with similar long-term recurrence rates.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures
  • Phlebology

Background:

  • Great saphenous vein (GSV) ablation is standard for lower limb varices.
  • Existing methods have drawbacks: invasiveness, poor aesthetics, long recovery, and recurrence.
  • Minimally invasive, effective alternatives are needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a novel intraoperative trunk catheter scieroobliteration for GSV and tributaries.
  • To compare this new method with standard combined venectomy for lower limb varices.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 493 lower limb variceal surgeries (1997-2002).
  • 186 patients underwent intraoperative trunk scieroobliteration (2nd group).
  • 188 patients underwent standard combined venectomy (1st group).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Follow-up ranged from 4 weeks to 5 years.
  • Main Results:

    • The scieroobliteration group had fewer postoperative hematomas and no saphenous nerve injuries.
    • Improved aesthetics were noted due to fewer incisions.
    • Postoperative rehabilitation was twice as short in the scieroobliteration group.
    • Long-term recurrence rates were comparable between groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Intraoperative trunk scieroobliteration of the GSV is a viable alternative to standard combined venectomy.
    • This minimally invasive approach offers significant advantages in terms of complications and recovery time.
