Summary

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) mortality has decreased due to immune recovery in HIV patients. Advances in understanding JC virus biology and immune responses offer new therapeutic strategies for this deadly CNS disease.

  • It is caused by the reactivation of the JC polyomavirus (JCV), leading to oligodendrocyte infection and lysis.
  • This review focuses on recent clinical, pathological, and etiological advancements in PML.
