Summary

In active multiple sclerosis (MS), the Th1/Th2 immune balance shifts, with decreased expression of CCR2 and CD14 on monocytes. This suggests monocytes play a role in MS remission.

Background:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system.
  • Immune cell dysregulation, particularly involving T-helper cells and monocytes, is implicated in MS pathogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression of CCR2 on blood monocytes and the Th1/Th2 balance in patients with active MS.
  • To explore the correlation between monocyte markers and the Th1/Th2 ratio in MS.

Main Methods:

  • Three-color flow cytometry was used to quantify CD4+CXCR3+ (Th1) cells, CD4+CCR4+ (Th2) cells, and CD14+CCR2+ monocytes.
  • Analysis was performed on 15 patients with active MS and compared to healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • The Th1/Th2 ratio (CD4+CXCR3+/CD4+CCR4+) was significantly elevated in active MS patients compared to controls.
