Summary

Evidence for community-based childhood injury prevention programs is limited. More research is needed to establish the effectiveness of these interventions in reducing all-cause injury in children.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Injury Prevention

Background:

  • Community-based models are increasingly recognized as part of injury control strategies.
  • Evaluating their effectiveness in reducing childhood injuries is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the scientific literature on the effectiveness of community-based injury prevention programs for children aged 0-14.
  • To assess the evidence for reducing all-cause injury rates.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search identified community-based intervention studies with injury rates as outcomes.
  • Studies included children under 14 and used community or historical controls.
  • Quality assessment and data abstraction were performed independently.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Only nine formally evaluated programs reported injury outcomes.
  • Seven studies used contemporary controls; three showed significant effects.
  • Two studies without controls reported significant injury reductions.

Conclusions:

  • There is a significant lack of research on the effectiveness of community-based childhood injury prevention programs.
  • A need exists to expand the evidence base through further research and evaluation.
