Summary

Elderly individuals do not always have lower physical activity levels (PAL) than younger adults, despite differences in daily activities like housework and gardening. This study challenges assumptions about aging and activity.

  • To compare the physical activity patterns and physical activity level (PAL) between young and elderly subjects.
  • To investigate if elderly individuals exhibit lower physical activity levels than their younger counterparts.

  • Assessed various activities (occupational work, housework, gardening, walking, sports) via questionnaire in young and elderly participants.
  • Calculated energy expenditure using WHO multipliers for resting metabolic rate (RMR).
  • Measured RMR via indirect calorimetry and calculated PAL (total energy expenditure/RMR).
